Getting Started
What
do you need to get started strength training? All you need is a few small
inexpensive dumbell weights. A simple bench helps, but is not required
(you can just use a kitchen chair or the floor for most exercises). You
don't need to go out and spend $1000 on a set of professional weights,
or all kinds of crazy machines. The nice thing about dumbells is that
they're relatively inexpensive. You can buy a couple of 10-pound weights
for around $20. Plus, as you progress and you feel you're ready for more
weight, you can just buy another set of heavier dumbells.
If
you don't want to buy the dumbells that are a set weight, you can also buy
a dumbell set that comes with a bar and plates. These work nice too
because you can change the weight on them. They cost a little more, but
they give you more flexibility. You will find, however, that changing
weight between exercises can get a little annoying. It's a little easier
to set the 10# weights on the rack and just pick up the 20# weights. For
now, all you need to worry about is just getting something to lift.
Now that you have some dumbells, here is a simple workout that I
recommend for beginners. Click on the link for each exercise for
instructions on how to perform it. As time goes on, I will expand on this,
and also put together workout plans for intermediate and advanced strength
training. Right now, I'll assume you're a beginner.
Note that strength training exercises don't always involve weights.
Some exercises, like abdominal crunches, can be performed using just your
own weight against gravity. As time goes on, however, you can add weight
to these exercises - but for now we don't need weights for all of them.
